Alphabet Play Skirt Pattern

I participated in a crafting competition and this alphabet play skirt pattern was created as one of the entries.  It got enough votes to keep me in the contest and while I didn’t create a full tutorial with photos of each step, if you have even basic sewing experience, you’ll have no trouble making an alphabet play skirt of your own!

We sing the ABC’s a lot in this house and with kindergarten looming on the horizon for my twins, this little skirt idea came to mind.

To make one, you’ll need fabric in coordinating patterns and colors {this is a great way to use up some of your fabric stash if you have a lot of material left over from other projects}, heat and bond, elastic for the waist, and coordinating thread.

I sewed a simple skirt with an elastic waist, leaving a little extra room for legs to be able to run …

… and creating the hem from a coordinating fabric.

To make the hem, I simply stitched a border onto the bottom of the skirt, then folded it back up inside and hemmed it.  I’m lazy so I topstitched around the top of the border and made sure the topstitching also tacked the hem down inside.

To make the appliqued letters, I applied heat and bond to different pieces of fabric and used a cutting machine to cut the letters, making them a few inches high.

If you don’t have a cutting machine, you can use an alphabet stencil to trace the letters onto the bonded fabric and then cut them out with fabric scissors.

Use an iron or EasyPress machine to bond the letters onto the fabric then stitch around the edges to hold them in place.  The bonding material will prevent the edges from fraying.

This little skirt is cool and comfortable which is always welcome in the heat of Texas …

… and it’s super cute too!

This little alphabet play skirt is a fun way to use up fabric scraps and have a sweet little sewing project to keep you busy!

I’m confused, so one of those is yours again this week? Ok, I think I know which one.
