DIY Felt Piggy Bank

I have to share what Kennedy made Tate for her birthday.  This DIY felt piggy bank turned out so cute and it was a really simple project that can easily be whipped up by anyone that can sew a straight stitch.  It’s even a great first sewing project for kids.

DIY felt piggy bank

We saw similar piggy banks in a catalog that came in the mail and Kennedy and I both fell in love.  Kenn knew Tate would love it as well and decided to sew one as a birthday gift.  {And Tate really does love it … I think it’s gone to bed with her every night!}

To make the piggy bank, you’ll need two small pieces of felt or one large piece that you can fold in half.

We found a cute pig template online, printed it out, and I made a few alterations to make it look a little more like the original shape that we saw.  We liked the very square snout, the pointy ears, and the chunky body.

I helped Kennedy make a buttonhole in the middle of a piece of felt {making sure it was big enough to fit a quarter} and then pinned the paper template over two pieces of felt, lining them up so the buttonhole was in the center of the pig’s back.

Kennedy sewed directly over the pig outline on top of the paper and through the felt.  Once it was sewn, we carefully peeled the paper away, allowing the stitching to act like a perforated line, and used fabric shears to trim close to the stitch line, creating the shape of the pig.

This little felt piggy bank turned out so cute and took less than ten minutes to make.  A perfect gift idea, don’t you think?

    You just squeeze the money back through the slot. It works well.
