Do you love plants? I’m always drawn to rooms on instagram that are full of plants of all different types and sizes. They add so much color and warmth to a room but, in addition to decor, plants also make unique gifts. Last week I was wandering through Calloway’s Nursery and after fawning over the gorgeous flocked trees and aromatic cedar garlands, I filled my cart with lush seasonal plants to give as gifts. Whether you need a hostess gift, a teacher gift, or just something for that hard-to-buy-for family member, a plant is the solution. And I have six ways to gift plants for the holiday season that take each item up a notch and make it a really beautiful gift idea!
What better way to deck the halls than with living plants? They add the perfect pop of red, green, and white to Christmas decor along with texture and aroma. Poinsettias, blooming Christmas cactus plants, small Christmas trees, and rosemary plants are the perfect addition to home decor during the holiday season! They’re delightful as is but with just a few small touches, they make lovely gifts.
Check out these six ideas and then let me know your favorite way to gift plants during the holiday season!
Poinsettia in a Bark Planter
Poinsettias are gorgeous just as they are. The contrast of color against the dark green leaves is simply stunning and no other plant says Christmas the way a poinsettia does. Calloway’s has poinsettias in a variety of colors and sizes which make them perfect for gifting and a bark planter is a gorgeous addition.
To make a bark planter, you’ll need bark ribbon or sheets from the craft store and contrasting ribbon for wrapping around the bark.
Cut the bark ribbon or sheets into pieces just slightly taller than the pot the poinsettia sits in and use hot glue to attach them, overlapping the bark so none of the original pot shows.
Once the bark is glued all the way around the pot, wrap a piece of ribbon around the pot and hot glue the ends in place.
The contrast of the rustic bark and the bold plant is so elegant looking.
Small Christmas Tree in a Santa Mug or Thrifted Tea Cup
If you need something a bit more whimsical, a tiny Christmas tree is perfect. Calloway’s Nursery has a few varieties of small Christmas trees and I may have bought a handful … I just can’t resist a cute little tree!
In addition to the tree, you’ll need to pop in to your favorite thrift store for a Christmas themed tea cup or collectible Santa mug {be sure it’ll fit the small Christmas tree}.
Remove the tree from the store pot and place it in the tea cup or mug, adding more potting soil if needed {you won’t need any additional soil unless the mug is really large}.
Hand letter a cute little tag, print it out on your computer, or print and cut it on a Cricut machine like I did. Hot glue the tag to a wooden skewer …
… and stick it into the soil next to the tree. So simple but so cute!
Small Christmas Tree in a Snowman Pot
A handmade snowman pot is another festive way to gift a small Christmas tree.
You’ll need a small terracotta pot {large enough to fit the Christmas tree}, white spray paint, fabric scraps for a scarf, and a few black buttons.
Spray paint the pot white …
… tie a strip of fabric around the top and attach it in place with a few dabs of hot glue then hot glue a row of buttons down the front.
Plant the Christmas tree in the snowman pot or simply place it, still planted in the store pot, inside the snowman pot.
This is a craft that the kids can help with {they can hand paint the pot instead of spray painting} and it would be perfect for a babysitter, the piano teacher, or anyone else the kids love!
Christmas Cactus Party Favors and Gift Idea with Printable
The cactus trend is still going strong and Christmas cactus plants make such great seasonal gifts or party favors.
Calloway’s has larger cactus plants and tiny cactus plants and the little ones are just perfect for place cards or party favors while the larger ones make great gifts.
Wrapping plants in paper bags is one of my favorite things because it’s so simple, so inexpensive, and looks so darn cute.
Small gift bags work perfectly for the little cactus plants and regular lunch bags are just the right size for the larger plants.
Scrunch the bags up to make them wrinkled, then fold down the top, two or three times, until it’s the right height for the plant.
To make party favors, add a little thank you tag, hand lettered or machine printed and cut and hot glue it to a skewer.
Guests will love going home from a holiday party with a festive plant they can enjoy all season long!
To gift a larger Christmas cactus plant, scrunch and roll a lunch bag and place the pot inside …
… then click on this punny Christmas cactus tag, print it out, cut to size, and hot glue it to a skewer.
Perfect for last minute gift giving! I’m stocking up on a few of these plants so I have something ready for those people I forgot to add to the list. We all have those oops moments, don’t we?
Rosemary Plant in a Burlap Pot with Printable
Rosemary is one of my favorite herbs and I love having a rosemary plant in the kitchen so I can quickly snip some and add fresh herbs to any dish. And the scent is delightful!
The rustic nature of burlap looks so great with a rosemary plant and you can find seasonal printed burlap at your local craft store.
Cut a square of burlap, wrap it up around the pot, and tie it with a large piece of burlap or other coordinating ribbon.
Click on the link for this punny rosemary tag, print it out, cut to size, and hot glue it to a wooden skewer.
Slide it into the rosemary plant and you have a quick and easy, and completely practical, gift. This idea is especially fun for someone who loves to cook or garden.
Amaryllis Bulb in a Mason Jar
For years and years, I’ve planted paperwhite or amaryllis bulbs at Christmas time. If you plant them at the right time, it’s so rewarding to watch them grow into delicate paperwhite flowers or large, colorful amaryllis flowers just in time for Christmas.
Bulbs are so affordable which make them a really great gift, especially if you need something in bulk. This gift idea is perfect for the members of your book club or for a neighborhood gift exchange.
Gifting a bulb involves not much more than throwing the bulb in a mason jar with some potting soil but it’s always fun to take it up a notch and add something to the jar.
I used my Cricut Maker and glitter vinyl to create an elegant embellishment on the side of this mason jar but if you don’t have a cutting machine, a pretty sticker is a great alternate.
Tie some tulle or ribbon around the jar and you’re ready for gift giving!
Are you inspired to skip the department store and shop at Calloway’s Nursery this Christmas?
