5 Tips for Junking

A friend and I are heading to Canton for a quick day trip this weekend {can you hear my excitement?  I can’t wait!}.  I’ve been making lists of things I’ll be looking for and I decided to share some of my tips for junking with you.

5 tips for junking

Tip One: Make an inspiration list.

5 tips for junking
I’ve been jotting down ideas, checking my pinterest boards for projects I’ve had in mind, and making a list of things big and small that I’d like to look for.  There are certain things {like wrought iron hooks} that I know I’ll find, and other things {like an exit sign} that might be trickier.

Tip Two: Know your price limits.

5 tips for junking
When something is merely a thought and not something I truly need to find, I set a low price limit for myself.

Case in point: I had been looking for a washboard for quite some time but the ones I found were all priced at $20 and I wanted one for $2.  Crazy, right?

Crazy until I struck gold on my last Canton trip.  I stuck to my price limit and scored a $2 washboard.  Knowing your price limit means you won’t get talked into buying something at a price you later regret.

Which brings me to my next tip.

Tip Three: Be willing to barter.

5 tips for junking
If you’ve ever watched Flea Market Flip {one of my favorite shows right now}, you’ll know that most vendors are willing to barter.  Offer them a price that you think is fair.  Even be willing to lowball.  You might get a solid no but you also might score something you love at a really great price.

Tip Four: Carry a pen and notepad.

One thing I love about wandering around Canton is all the inspiration I find in things I see.  I use the memo on my phone or a notepad and pen to jot down ideas for future projects.

Tip Five: See beyond the dirt.

5 tips for junking
Many of the finds at a large outdoor sale are filthy.  Try to look beyond the dirt, the grime, and the peeling paint and see the treasure underneath.

I’ll let you know what I find in Canton after my day of junking!

Oh I wish I was going with you! I travel from Oklahoma down to Canton a few times a year and it is always so much fun. Probably won’t go till Fall now because of the heat. Have a great time and I’ll look forward to seeing what you bring home.

Great tips and advice. I can’t wait to start my list. I have been out junking and see something and can’t remember what I needed or what I needed it for. I end up not buying it and then remember later with regret.

I love going to Canton Trade Days. I did some Christmas shopping there recently. I will be going back soon. I live in Arlington so it isn’t too far.
