Monsters University Family Time

Our Monsters University craft family time is part of a sponsored post for Collective Bias®.

Are you excited about seeing Monsters University?  My kids have been watching Monsters, Inc. for days, getting in the Mike and Sulley spirit!  I have to say, I kind of have a thing for those monsters too.  Mike and Sulley are just so cute.

To celebrate Monsters University, we had a little family time with a crafty snack, a Disney drink, and a few decorations.  My oldest daughter came up with this Mike-themed cupcake cake and I thought it was the perfect treat for our family time.

To make your own Mike Wazowski cupcake cake, bake a batch of cupcakes and place them in a circle shape on a plate.

The center cupcake will be Mike’s eye.  Pipe a white border around the cupcake …

… then fill it in with icing and place a brown candy melt on top.

Using blue icing {I use plastic bags for piping and snip a hole in the corner} …

… draw a circle around the candy melt.  This will be Mike’s iris.  You should probably pipe it a bit thicker than I did.

One the eye is complete, you’re ready to fill in the rest of Mike.  Pipe green icing around the eye and around the outside of the cupcake circle.

I attempted to make Mike look more like a circle than a flower by piping across the cupcakes but it’s admittedly hard to turn him into a perfect circle.

Spread green icing in between the piped lines and draw simple legs and arms onto the plate.  We opted to leave his smile off but you could add a cute toothy grin as well.

What do you think?  Does he kind of look like this guy?  He may not be perfect but my younger kids loved our cupcake cake and couldn’t wait to dive in.

To make our time a bit more festive, we hung some bright green balloons and added Mike eyes by cutting circles from white, blue, and black paper {paper punches in varying sizes work perfectly} and attaching them to the balloons.

Lila, my resident artist, decided to embellish some of the balloons a little further.  Next time I’ll put her in charge of decorations!

We used a talking Mike doll as a table decoration …

A Monster drink and some cupcakes were a really great way to spend a summer afternoon.

Are your kids excited about Monsters University?  Who’s your favorite character?
