A Home Tour :: Aurora

I love getting a sneak peek into someone else’s home.  I like to know how someone decorates, what colors they chose for their walls, and what pictures get a special spot on the walls.

You too?

Then you’ll love the home tour I’m sharing today!

Over the last year or so, my friend, Lori, has made some major changes to her home {that coincided with some major life changes}.  Her home has become a haven and a refuge and there are so many fun details in the kitchen and dining room that I thought it would be fun to share those rooms with you.  And if you love thrifting, you’ll love seeing all of the thrifty treasures in this home.

But first we have to start at the front door.  The bright yellow, welcoming front door is symbolic of the house which Lori has named Aurora.  Aurora means new dawn.  Very fitting for the home and the journey.

I’m going to take you straight through to the kitchen to one of my very favorite features in the whole house: the turquoise sliding doors on the back wall of the kitchen.

The door on the right leads into the laundry room and the door on the left leads into a walk-in pantry.  The pantry used to be a narrow entrance into the garage but it was closed off {and another entrance was installed elsewhere} and transformed into a pantry.

The shiny black hardware …

… is the perfect accent, isn’t it?

It ties in beautifully with the upholstered houndstooth chair that sits against the white planked walls.

And you can’t miss the colored buttons along the back of the chair.  Such a fun surprise for the eye!

Chevron artwork {made by Lori’s niece} and an apron {made from vintage fabric Lori found at an estate sale in Oregon} adorn a side wall.

A gorgeous, shiny chandelier {a Pottery Barn close-out} lights the kitchen …

… and hangs from the bright white planked ceiling.

Another apron {a flea market find} acts as a valance on the small window above the kitchen sink.

Two barstools sit at the breakfast bar.  Lori recovered the cushions with oilcloth and added ruffled skirts in colorful fabrics.

A distressed white desk sits in the corner along with a white chair upholstered in a large houndstooth pattern.  You’ll see more of that beautiful houndstooth in the dining room.

The dining room, formerly a dark green study, now has black walls and pieces that offer a stark contrast.  The plantation shutters that fit perfectly on the window were found at a local thrift store for $40.  Lori claims they’re her best find ever.

Another chandelier hangs from the ceiling, this one black with crystals.

This painted armoire {another thrift store find} is a favorite.  The bright yellow background adds such a fun pop of color to the room …

… and I love the chicken wire that replaced the glass.

Along one wall of the dining room sits a sideboard that was formerly a wet bar in another room.  The counter was replaced with granite that matches the kitchen counters.

The white cabinet ties in perfectly with the white armoire and the houndstooth chairs {garage sale finds that were painted and reupholstered} that circle the table.  Lori says eating in the dining room is like eating in a tiny jewelry box.

See why I love these rooms?  So many neat details with so many stories.

Thanks to Lori for letting us take a peek inside her beautiful house!

    Randi!
Thanks for making me fall in love with Aurora all over again! I forgot to tell you…the mirror over the sideboard was originally over the wet bar. I shoved it behind something years ago. I found the frame at a garage sale and refinished it. The mirror/glass place charged me $7.00 to cut the old mirror and install it in the frame. It does help to hoard occasionally. 😉
