Wooden Button Trivet

Last fall, at Pinners Conference in Dallas, I bought a couple of boxes of weathered wooden buttons and this week I used four of the large buttons to create a farmhouse style wooden button trivet!  I love the simple look and it’s a great way to protect my counters and tables from hot food items.

To make this practical craft, you’ll need four large wooden buttons {the ones I used are about three inches diameter} and grosgrain ribbon {3/4-1 inch wide} in a color of your choice.  I chose to stick with neutrals so the trivet will go with anything but I also think it would look fabulous with bright colored ribbon or even a patterned ribbon.  Thinner ribbon or something other than grosgrain will slip within the holes so choose the ribbon carefully.

Lay the buttons in the formation shown below and thread the ribbon through two outer holes on one button and then through two outer holes on the button beside it.  Repeat with the other two buttons then continue the opposite direction until the buttons all have a ribbon square in the center and all four buttons are held tightly together.

Trim the ends of the ribbon under the buttons and add a dab of hot glue to attach them to the bottom of the buttons if desired.

If you want or need a larger trivet, you can add more rows of buttons, making it as large as you want.

This functional farmhouse style wooden button trivet is perfect for a pot of tea or a large casserole on a buffet … and simple and stylish is always the perfect pairing!

For another great way to use large wooden buttons, be sure to take a peek at this farmhouse style button garland that’s perfect for stringing across a mirror or mantel or even down the center of a table.

What a great use for those huge buttons. I would have looked at them forever, thinking how lovely they were but not having a clue what to do with them. Brilliant!
