If you’ve been around Dukes and Duchesses for a while, you’ve probably heard me say that coffee is my love language. It definitely is but dumpster diving, thrift stores, and upcycled projects are right up there in a race for second place. I love finding something old and giving it new life with a few tools and some paint. This upcycled table wall shelf is my latest project and it’s quirky and whimsical and fits right in with my vintage eclectic style.
In my rush to start this project, I didn’t get a picture of the original table so you’ll have to use your imagination a little.
My youngest daughter hauled it out of our neighbor’s trash pile a few weeks ago, dragged it down the street, and told me it would make a great project. I’ve trained her well {wink}.
The dark table wasn’t at all my style but I loved the lines of it and the details in the table legs.
I had my Dad slice off one end of the table, straight across, leaving a depth of about fourteen or so inches.
Once cut, I added a piece of wood to the back, creating a support bracket for hanging, and screwed it in through the sides and the top of the shelf.
It took just a few minutes to turn the table into a shelf and prepare it for painting.
I knew this would be the perfect project to finish with Jolie Paint.
When I was at Alt Summit in March, I had the chance to meet the team from Jolie Paint {a water-based, non-toxic premier paint}, watch a demo of the products, and get a little hands-on experience with this gorgeous matte finish paint. I loved the product and couldn’t wait to use it on a project.
Paint is the perfect way to personalize a project and add your own style and Jolie Paint makes that so easy. It works on almost any surface which is why I knew it would be the perfect way to cover this dark, shiny, possibly waxed table. I didn’t have to sand or prime {hooray because when I tackle a project, the prep work is my least favorite part} and the coverage was excellent, even using white paint over such a dark base.
I applied the first coat of Palace White, part of Jolie’s Serenity Color Collection and one of the lightest whites in the Jolie color range.
It adhered so well and covered the dark base better than I expected.
Because the paint is quick-drying, I was able to add another coat shortly after.
I used a Jolie brush to apply the paint and kind of pushed it into all the crevices and spaces. My painting technique is far from professional and I was a bit worried that you’d be able to see every line from the brush …
… but once I had the shelf painted and then applied the clear finishing wax to give it a transparent finish …
… it looked so great!
The paint really made the features and flaws {my favorite} of this old table pop!
Because the table shelf is quite heavy, I used cabinet screws to hang it, screwing them right into studs for the best support.
I hung the shelf over the dresser in my room {a dresser that’s probably going to get its own coat of paint soon!} …
… and it’s such a fun and eclectic addition to my quirky and colorful decor!
This little table that was destined for the dump is now a practical and useful shelf!
It’s also given me the painting bug and I’ve made a list of projects that I want to tackle and some finishes I want to try. And I can’t wait to experiment with the color mixing guide to mix up my own custom colors!
If you haven’t heard of Jolie Paint, be sure to check them out online, take the style quiz {it’s surprisingly accurate!}, and download the Jolie Everyday Guide to learn about the products and get instructions for six different finishes!
