Handprint Baby Stocking

Since Tate was just born a few months ago, her knit stocking {made by Grandma} isn’t ready yet so I made a simple handprint baby stocking for her to use this year.  When her real stocking is ready, we’ll add this one to her memory box as a sweet keepsake of that teeny tiny little hand!

My mom has always made our regular knit Christmas stockings, beginning with my family of origin. When my brother and I got married, our spouses got stockings, and each child has had a stocking made for them.  The family of origin all have stockings with red heels and toes, the spouses have green heels and toes, and the kids have a mixed combination.

Over the years, my mom’s gotten tired of knitting these stockings and happily retired the pattern after Luke and Lila were born. When we found out we were expecting Tate, one of my mom’s first comments was about the downfall of having to make another stinkin’ stocking. She even tried to talk us into giving the baby a name beginning with C or M so that she could just pass down her stocking or my dad’s stocking {smile}. We didn’t cooperate and Tate will soon be getting her own knitted sock.

In the meantime, I was inspired by some personalized stockings from Red Envelope.  I bought a simple felt stocking {on sale for under $2}, sewed some pom pom trim onto the cuff, and attempted to stamp Tate’s white-painted handprint onto it. Some ideas are harder in real life. Paintbrushes and clenched baby hands aren’t the best combination.

The final product is not quite what I had envisioned {and I stopped after one handprint rather than the two I had planned} but this handprint baby stocking will be a cute bit of memorabilia from Tate’s first Christmas.

I love the final product. I think it will be a sweet reminder of the tiny girl on her first Christmas. How hard was it to get the paint out of her hair? Should I expect a punk rocker in the morning?

That is so funny and I think that the stocking turned out pretty cute.

Yes it would look a little funny if Tate had a different one than everyone else hey! But Gramma Cheryl has a year to knit it now 🙂

It is very cute. I love the dot of paint on Tate’s little head. Maybe she’s already into making her own accessories.
