Reverse Applique Ruffled Heart Shirt

I was in Old Navy the other day and saw the cutest shirt that I knew I could make for a third of the price.  It took less than five dollars and less than ten minutes to make this reverse applique ruffled heart shirt and my little one will look so cute wearing it!  Whether you make this shirt for Valentine’s Day or just a regular day at school, this simple shirt is too cute!

I bought a patterned zebra t-shirt at Walmart {the Old Navy original used a striped shirt but I went for a bold zebra print} and a small piece of ruffled fabric for the heart.

Be sure to choose a fabric color that contrasts well with the shirt.

To make the shirt, I pinned the ruffled fabric to the inside front of the shirt, right side up, then pinned a heart template over top {drawn on tissue paper}.  You can freehand the heart or use a stencil or a heart printed from your computer.

Using contrasting thread, I sewed over the heart, right through the front of the shirt and the ruffled fabric.

I slowly peeled away the tissue paper {the needle leaves a perforated line that simplifies the peeling but pull away slowly so you don’t stretch the stitches or pull them out} …

… and cut along the inside of the stitches, cutting through the shirt but not the ruffled material.

The edges of the knit shirt won’t fray but may turn up slightly after a wash or two.  The look is cute and just adds to the look of the shirt.

The end result is a cute shirt with a dark pink ruffled heart, just perfect for a young girl.
