My girls are all over the cactus trend … and I have to say, I love it too. I don’t know how it is that cacti suddenly became cute but here we are {wink}. My oldest daughter came up with a fun idea that combines our love of cacti with Halloween and here it is: a prick or treat Halloween cactus shirt! I know it might feel a little early to be thinking about Halloween crafts but if all the local craft stores can start Halloween crafting in the summer, so can we, right?
To make this Halloween cactus shirt, I started with a plain white tee from Walmart. You can find plain shirts at craft stores as well but the price and styles are far cuter at Walmart.
I designed the image on Cricut Design Space and used my Cricut Maker to cut the pieces from iron on heat transfer. I used regular black and orange iron on, green foil iron on, and black and white patterned iron on to create the design. Don’t forget to mirror the images before you cut and place the iron on heat transfer shiny side down on the cutting mat.
If you want to create a shirt too, you can find this image here in Cricut Design Space.
Once the pieces were all cut, I adhered them to the shirt using the Cricut EasyPress. If you don’t already have one, this is an amazing tool. I used to try to attach designs using a regular iron but the heat isn’t consistent enough and my designs would peel off after the first wash. The EasyPress has made me love iron on heat transfer again!
I placed the cactus and the text first and adhered them to the shirt, following the manufacturer’s instructions for times and temperatures based on the materials.
Don’t forget that as you add different pieces of the design, you need to use the clear backing to cover any iron on that you’ve already applied.
After the flower was placed, I added the garland in two steps. With the garland still on the backing, I laid twine across it then placed it on the cactus and pressed it down. The little pendant flags will hold the twine in place.
Then I added the black and white garland pieces, lining them up with the twine as well. I trimmed the edges of the twine after it was all in place.
The coloring in these photos is a little darker than the design looks in real life but I love the way it turned out …
… and my little one is excited about having a holiday shirt to wear when fall finally arrives in Texas!
