Summer has fully arrived in Texas!  We almost hit a hundred degrees this weekend and we’re about to open up our backyard pool for daily swims {it’s a survival technique here in the South}.  I’m also getting the yard in shape and doing one of my favorite summer activities: planting our herb pots.  I love walking out the back door to cut fresh, organic herbs for dinner.  No herb pots are complete without some cute painted upcycled twig plant markers … and since they’re made from twigs you can find in your yard, you can make them for almost no cost at all!

I only grow herbs that I know we’ll eat regularly and I often plant them in Miracle-Gro potting soil.  I not only want to grow delicious, flavorful herbs but I want to grow healthy eating in my home.  Tending the herb pots all summer makes my kids even more keen about flavoring their food and trying new things.  It also helps them grow a love of nature and the outdoors.  Picking your own herbs and vegetables right out of backyard pots makes eating and trying new foods a whole lot more fun!  And Miracle-Gro gives my not-so-green thumb the boost it needs to grow big, healthy, flourishing plants!

{Want to know one of my other secrets to making my plants grow like wildfire?  I swear by Beat Your Neighbor Plant Food.  It turned my almost-dead rose bushes into bushes that are absolutely covered in roses!}

The basil plants are already off to a great start …

… and so are the other herbs I’m growing.  My favorite herbs to grow are rosemary, dill, basil, and thyme because they’re virtually indestructible {wink}.

This year my pots of herbs are labeled with cute DIY painted twig plant markers.

To make them, simply gather a few twigs from your yard or a local park and use craft paint to paint the ends in bright colorful colors.

Once the paint is dry, use a thin Sharpie to write the names of the plants over the paint …

… and stick them into your herb containers or garden.

They add a fun touch and you’ll never get those greens mixed up!

What are you growing this summer?

    We’ve already lost our herbs. I live in southwest Ok. Told the hubs wasn’t even trying this year, but he said yes. I have tried 5 yrs trying to grow cilantro, basil and tomatoes (this year thyme). Last yr bought a cage with a very healthy tomato plant in it. We watch the flowers fall to the ground flower after flower. 2 fruit eventually got to the size of a 1/2 dollar and turned black. We use miracle grow, water and watch them die. Great to see yours are doing well. I give up.
