Paint Dipped Wood Block Vase

I’m really loving the look of plain wood lately and I’ve been thinking of different things I can do with my scrap pile.  A couple of months ago I made Scandinavian-style candlesticks from blocks of wood and today I’m sharing a tutorial for a paint dipped wood block vase.

To make these vases, I used pieces of 2×4 {cut to approximately 4 or 5 inches in length} and small vials that I bought a while ago from Pick Your Plum.

I taped a line around the middle of each block and then dipped the bottom of the wood block {below the tape} in thick chalky finish paint {I used DecoArt’s chalky finish paint in two different colors}.  I peeled the tape off while the paint was still wet, then let the blocks drip dry.  Because the paint was so thick, it cracked a bit when it dried but it has kind of a neat look and I left the cracked finish alone.

When the paint was completely dry, I drilled holes in the middle of the top of each block, making the holes just a smidge wider than the glass vials, then inserted the glass vials in the hole to act as water receptacles.

The end result is a cute painted vase that can hold fresh flowers or a small succulent … and they look so cute in pairs on my family room mantel!

Those are pretty impressive. It would be fun project to do with my daughter, a couple with black dipped bottoms would look great as accents on the table when she graduates this spring!

Very creative! I could let my girls do the painting, since they love to paint…and they love flowers! Perfect for our balcony.

Such a great idea for using the scraps of wood leftover from other projects.
