Orange Peel Wire Garland

This orange peel wire garland was created as part of a sponsored post for Halos.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Christmas in our house always has lots of handmade touches but this year I’m fully embracing handmade and homespun.  I love the personal touch it adds to the holiday.  This orange peel wire garland is my latest favorite project!

We’re already on our second box of Halos mandarins this holiday season and it’s only just begun.  They’re a favorite snack for my kids and I’m happy to see them eating fresh food in the midst of all the sugar during the holidays!

I decided it might be fun to repurpose the peels into a garland inspired by this one but decided to alter it and use wire for a fun contrast.

To make an orange peel wire garland, peel a number of mandarins, making sure you leave pieces large enough to cut with a shaped cookie cutter.

I used a one inch metal star cutter and cut piles of little stars, pressing the cookie cutter firmly into the peel {it cuts right through without any difficulty}.  Save the other peel pieces and use them in stovetop potpourri {it’ll make your house smell amazing!}.

I threaded thick craft wire through each star, going in one side and out the other so the stars sit solidly without moving around.  In between the stars, I wrapped the wire around a pencil to give it a little coil.  I worked in sections to avoid having a huge, long piece of tangled wire, then connected the sections together by wrapping the wire together.

The result is a natural-looking, colorful garland that looks so pretty and festive against my evergreen tree!  As the orange peel dries, the stars will shrink slightly but will still hold their form against the wire.

Are you eating Halos this Christmas?  What are you doing with the orange peels?
