Do you remember when I shared my upcycled shutter valance a couple of months ago? I had a bright green chair sitting in front of the window for the photo but my plan was to paint a vintage piece of furniture I had, top it with a knit ottoman cover, and place a big plant next to it for a bohemian touch in my family room. I finally finished knitting the ottoman cover and this little window space is complete!
I’ve owned this neat vintage piece for years, a hand-me-down from grandparents. The top of it can flip so it can be used as a stool or as a table {the other side is flat wood}. While I know some of you will cringe that I painted the natural wood, I’m a firm believer that if something doesn’t suit my style, I should change it so it does. My current house is all about color so this stool got a makeover!
I painted it bright green {one of the six colors that you’ll see all through my house} and knit a navy cover for it. I was inspired by the ottoman cover I saw on Ravelry and decided I could figure out my own pattern instead of buying this one. Because my stool is shaped differently, the cover doesn’t sit quite the same but the idea is the same.
I knit a large rectangle in seed stitch to cover the top of the ottoman then knit four other rectangles for each side. The number of rows for each side piece is identical and you just have to figure out how wide to make the pieces. You can calculate that easily by measuring the sides of the ottoman and calculating it according to the gauge of the yarn. I used a bulky yarn {Lion Brand Wool-Ease in Navy} because I wanted it to have a lot of body and texture.
The seed stitch {K1, P1, alternating on each row} also gives it a lot of body and texture and I love the look of it.
With the white tile in this room {that won’t be replaced any time soon}, I’ve been wanting to add accessories that will warm the space up and this cozy knit ottoman cover definitely helps. And my huge new plant, settled in a polka dot painted vintage sap bucket, doesn’t hurt either.
The decor in my new house is slowly coming together and I’m loving the process of figuring out what I really want in the house and what style suits me. It’s definitely an eclectic mix but it feels like home.
