Homemade Microwave Popcorn

My kids love microwave popcorn {and I love the ease of it} but I wanted to find an alternative to the storebought varieties.  We eat those too but I prefer to make something that has just a few ingredients in it and I really like knowing exactly what’s in the popcorn I’m making, especially when my kids are eating it. After perusing the internet for ideas, we came up with our own variation on homemade microwave popcorn. It’s not only delicious but so economical and all you need is a paper lunch bag to cook it in!

How to Make Homemade Microwave Popcorn

To make homemade paper bag popcorn, you’ll need a small paper bag, raw popcorn kernels, olive oil, and salt {or any other spices that you like to use on your popcorn.}

{Ingredient measurements and full instructions can be found in the printable recipe card below.}

To make the popcorn, simply mix the ingredients together, place them in the paper bag, and microwave.  I prefer to use the popcorn setting on my microwave but if your microwave doesn’t have one, simply listen for the slowing pops to know when it’s done {technical, right?}.

Be sure to keep an eye on the popcorn as it’s cooking.  I’ve never had an issue with the paper bag burning but better safe than sorry.

  2. Pour into a lunch-sized paper bag, fold the top over two or three times, and place in the microwave.
  3. Cook for three to five minutes, listening for the popping to slow {stop cooking when there are five seconds between pops}.
  4. Pour into a bowl and add additional salt or other spices as desired.

This recipe is so good and older children can easily make it with adult supervision.  I love that it contains only three simple and inexpensive ingredients.  Try it and let me know what you and your kiddos think!

    Love this idea! I had resorted to the old fashioned stove top method after reading how bad the microwave stuff is for you. This would not entail dirtying as many dishes!

    I’m linking from Someday Crafts.

    I just had to tell you, when I first opened this post, I thought it was titled “Pooping”. I thought maybe you were going to tell people to eat popcorn when they’re constipated. (Believe me, that’s a valid solution.)
