I was given a copy of DIY Rustic Modern Metal Crafts to review but all thoughts and opinions are my own.
I had fun this week wandering through the aisles of the hardware store, finding small industrial items to repurpose. These hardware store napkin rings were birthed out of that shopping trip and inspired by a book that I can’t wait to tell you about.
My friend, Laura, from Finding Home Farms, just published a gorgeous, inspiring book: DIY Rustic Modern Metal Crafts {affiliate link}. The book is filled with 35 projects that are an extension of the amazing galvanized metal projects that Laura has shared on her blog.
I love the look of galvanized metal and I oohed and aahed over every page. The combination of rustic and industrial is just perfect and I could envision every one of the projects in my home.
From simple to somewhat elaborate, there’s an idea for every level of DIY-er. And if you’ve got a DIY-er on your Christmas list, this would be perfect! You could even pair it with a few of the tools that Laura lists in the front of the book or with the supplies needed to make one of the projects. Wouldn’t that be a cool gift?
After reading through the book, I was completely inspired to try my hand at a simple project. The book has a tutorial for industrial style napkin rings made from strap iron and I decided to make something similar using 3/4 inch pipe straps.
I made three different versions of these industrial style napkin rings so grab two pipe straps for each one and pick your favorite version.
For the first version, all you have to do is attach two pipe straps together using screws and a nut on each side.
This is so simple but the contrast of the industrial napkin ring against cloth napkins and pretty dishes is so fun. I love an eclectic mix of styles.
For the next version, simply tie two pipe straps together with a piece of twine on each side …
… and hot glue a burlap flower on top for a blend of rustic and industrial. For something a bit different, you could use ribbon to tie the pieces together and top it with a fabric flower or a chipboard monogram.
The final napkin ring version includes a place card. Tie the pipe strap pieces together with twine or ribbon, tying in a piece of paper on one side. Add an initial or a full name.
Cute, right? And so simple that they can be made at the last minute. There are so many ways to customize these napkin rings to suit your style.
