My girls just love bath bombs.  My middle daughter has quite the collection of fun shapes and fabulous scents and this past weekend we decided to try making our own.  While homemade bath bombs require a few special ingredients, everything needed can easily be found online, and the process itself is actually really simple.  We whipped up a batch of Halloween pumpkin fizzing bath bombs with happy jack o’lantern faces and they turned out so cute!  My girls can’t wait to use some and gift the others to a few close friends.

To make homemade fizzing bath bombs, you’ll need

1 cup baking soda

1/2 cup citric acid

1/2 cup epsom salts

1/2 cup cornstarch, and

2 tablespoons liquid coconut oil.

You’ll also need a couple of other items to color and scent the bath bombs, and molds to shape them.

For these Halloween-themed bath bombs, I used

orange gel food coloring, and

10-15 drops tangerine or orange essential oils {or other scents if desired}.

You can use paste food coloring as well but I find it’s easier to mix in the gel color.

To shape and hold the bath bombs, I used plastic ornaments.

You can also use plastic disposable gloves, if desired, to mix the ingredients together.  I keep these gloves in my pantry all the time and use them for all kinds of messy kitchen jobs.

In a large bowl, combine the baking soda, citric acid, epsom salts, and cornstarch and use a fork to mix them well.

In a small bowl or ramekin, combine the coconut oil and essential oils then mix into the dry ingredients, using gloved hands.  Add gel food coloring or paste coloring to achieve the desired color, squeezing it into the mixture to combine well.

When the mixture is combined well and holds its shape when squeezed together, fill the ornaments to overflowing and then squeeze the two sides together, pressing out any extra but making sure the ornament is filled as tightly as can be with the bath bomb mixture.  You don’t want any air pockets left inside or the bath bombs won’t hold their shape after they’re dry.

Using a Cricut Maker or other cutting machine, cut jack o’lantern faces out of black vinyl and use transfer tape to apply them to the front of each ornament.

Tie tulle, twine, or ribbon through the top hole as a finishing touch.
