Gnomes are everywhere this holiday season and I’m loving this fun and whimsical trend!  I shared a few of my favorite gnome gift ideas along with some simple printable gnome gift tags a few weeks ago and now I have a really easy but adorable holiday craft to share: easy gnome pom pom cupcake toppers!

gnome pom pom cupcake toppers

This craft idea is really simple and a perfect way for the kids to help prepare for a party.  Set up an assembly line and let the kiddos make pom poms while you assemble the gnomes.

To make these little gnome cupcake toppers, you’ll need white yarn, a small pom pom maker {or you can use the fork method or another method to make the pom poms}, scissors, cardstock or felt in any color you want for the hat, small pom poms to use as the nose, and wooden skewers or lollipop sticks.

supplies for DIY gnome cupcake toppers

First, use the pom pom maker and the white yarn to create one pom pom for each cupcake topper.

These pom poms are about an inch and a half to two inches across.  I wouldn’t make them much bigger than that or they’ll overtake the cupcake.

Next, cut the hats out of cardstock or felt, one per pom pom.

I used my Cricut machine to make these hats and you can use the file I created by clicking on this gnome hats link in Cricut Design Space.  If you don’t have a cutting machine, you can easily cut the hats by hand using the image above as a guide.  They don’t have to be perfect.

The final step before assembly is to break or cut the skewers to a shorter size.  If you’re using lollipop sticks, the length is just right.

Use a hot glue gun to assemble the gnomes.

Curl the hat and glue the back ends in place.

Glue the small pom pom into the middle of the white pom pom then put hot glue along the inside bottom of the hat and set it onto the pom pom.  You’ll want it to sit right on top of the nose, as though it’s hiding the gnome’s eyes.

Use another dab of hot glue to attach the skewer to the bottom of the white pom pom and then pop these little gnome cupcake toppers into your favorite homemade or storebought cupcakes!

They’ll be the perfect addition to any holiday party and a fun and whimsical touch.

Are you embracing the gnome trend this year?
