Family Photo Tree

I finally finished a project that’s been in the works for over a year.  It just kept getting put off and put off but our family photo tree is now complete and adding some memorable and colorful decor to our upstairs hallway.

A year ago, I bought an old door at Habitat ReStore, painted it bright orange, and hung it in our yellow upstairs hallway.  I’m sure anyone that wandered upstairs has wondered about the quirky decor but perhaps they just figured a door on a wall matches my eclectic decorating style.

Last week I finally got down to business and finished this project.  I debated using a tree stencil to paint a large tree on the door but ended up using a white paint pen to freehand a whimsical lined tree instead.  It seemed to match the overall style I was wanting.

Months ago, I had gathered old photos from both sets of parents and printed them out in wallet size.  I ordered small, cheap place card frames {affiliate link} like the kind you’d see at a wedding and used spray paint remnants to paint the frames in bright colors.

I placed the photos inside the frames and hot glued them onto the tree, spacing them randomly and making sure the families were interspersed.

While you could accommodate generations of family, I opted only to go as far back as our grandparents.  I have some extra frames and may add a few more pictures as I come across them.  I’d love to have some photos of my grandparents as children.

My kids loved seeing these old photos and I’m just loving walking through the hallway and seeing this family photo tree with old pictures of people we love on display to enjoy.
