A towel bar in a kids’ bathroom is one of my least favorite things. It makes hanging the towels more difficult and the kids can never hang them so that they look nice. In my last house, I replaced the towel bar with numbered hooks for my three younger kids and I just recently took down the towel bar in this house and replaced it with whimsical DIY towel hooks! Since these hooks are for the kids, I couldn’t resist going with something a bit quirky and fun and these hands definitely fit the bill {wink}!
I had already chosen standard hooks when I came across these hand hooks at Hobby Lobby and I couldn’t resist. Hands holding the towels just seemed to fit my eclectic style perfectly.
I took down the old towel bar and then used a scrap board from my garage that was about the same length. I wanted a somewhat distressed look so I chose a board that already had nicks and scratches in it … and possibly a few nail holes from another project.
I sanded the board till it was smooth, then I spray painted the edges of the board red, let that dry, then spray painted the entire board turquoise.
Once the paint was all dry, I sanded the edges to let a bit of the red peek through. It’s super subtle but I like it.
The hand hooks were originally brown wrought iron so I spray painted them as well. I wanted them to pop against the board and coordinate with the bathroom so I painted them white but let some of brown show through to give them a bit of a vintage look.
I screwed the hand hooks onto the board …
… then screwed the board into the wall, using anchors since the wrought iron hooks are quite heavy.
These DIY towel hooks fit the style of our home so well …
… and the kids have hung up their towels every single day since I hung the towel hooks up.
That’s definitely a win, isn’t it?
