Years ago, I bought an old mail bag at Canton or Round Top or some other junk sale. I’ve used it for a few things over the years but recently I decided to turn it into something a bit more permanent and this DIY upcycled mail bag pillow was created! It’s quirky, whimsical, and colorful {all the things I love in my home} and definitely a fun piece of the past.
Before I show you how to make this upcycled mail bag pillow, I want to tell you about the monthly challenge happening in the Upcycle Sharin’ facebook group {click on that link to join over 50,000 other members that love repurposed projects and to get the upcycle challenge information each month}!
Monthly Themed Upcycle Challenge
At the beginning of each month this year, we’ll be posting a themed upcycling challenge. You’ll have the chance to link up one {or more} of your favorite projects that fit the theme {you don’t need to have a blog … you can simply link a photo at the bottom of this post} and readers will have the chance to vote on their favorites! So fun, right? Even cooler? We have sponsors each month so the winner will receive an awesome prize from one of our favorite brands!
This month’s theme is GREEN {your project must have some element of green in it} and the challenge is sponsored by Dixie Belle Paint Company! Dixie Belle Paint Company has amazing paint products in a variety of colors, glazes and finishes, stains, stencils, brushes and more! They’re the perfect products for upcyclers and repurposers to alter and update those old items!
The person with the most votes in this month’s challenge will win a prize pack valued at over a hundred dollars!

Dukes and Duchesses DIY Upcycled Mail Bag Pillow
So let’s look at this simple project!
I didn’t take photos of the process of making this pillow but the idea is very simple.
Because of the corners on the mail bag, I didn’t want to use a pillow insert because it wouldn’t give it the bulk it needed or get the needed shape in the bottom corners. Instead, we {and by we, I mean my awesome mom who doubles as my assistant!} filled the mail bag with cotton batting.
Once full, you just have to seal the pillow closed by stitching along the top, as close to the edge as possible.
And then, because I love the grommets and the string on top, we just fed that back through and tied it in a knot.
It’s super cute, super quirky …
… and a really fun addition to my living room!
It fits perfectly with my color home decor and fits right in with the other whimsical touches {wink}.
