10 DIY Shelf Ideas for the Home

My house is really lacking shelf space and I’ve been thinking about building some shelves for a few different rooms to give us some added storage and display space.  I was inspired by these DIY shelf ideas {one of the ideas is actually mine and I still love how simple and affordable it is!} and thought you’d enjoy seeing them too.

I’d love to see your DIY book cases, too … share a photo with us on the Dukes and Duchesses facebook page!

Crates can be updated to make really fabulous shelves.  The inside of these IKEA inspired painted crate shelves are bright orange but you can paint the outside, leave them plain, or stain them for a great customized look.  Hang them on a wall or stack them up on top of each other for a really affordable shelving solution.

This pegboard shelf unit is amazing.  Modern and minimal, this shelf unit can be styled any way you want to create a wall that fits your home.  Wouldn’t it look great with some bold and colorful accessories on those shelves?

The farmhouse style is so popular and these dining room farmhouse shelves are a great way to showcase favorite dishes or belongings.  They’re super simple even for a beginning DIYer.  And how much do you love the wallpaper on that wall?

This rope shelf idea is super simple and so fabulous.  It has rustic but modern charm and would look so great in any room.

These simple box shelves are one of my favorites.  The painted inside adds so much but I also love the clustered look of them.  They’re also a great example of how organization doesn’t have to look tacky.  With a spot for keys and sunglasses, these shelves are all about stylish organization.

A ledge shelf is so easy to make and the perfect way to show off gorgeous dishes and accessories.  Grab that platter that only gets used once a year and use it as decor.  This tutorial is a great place to start!

The wood slice trend is still hot and these wood slice shelves are a five minute project that’ll add a pop of rustic texture to a room.  These would be really great in a bathroom or even next to a bed as the perfect perch for a cup of water!

These ladder shelves are such a great look and I’d kind of like to copy this idea but start with a ready-made vintage ladder.  Chippy and distressed, of course!

This DIY floating shelf is perfect.  This project is so easy and it just adds such a great element to a room.  And even better when used to hold succulents, right?

A leather strap shelf would be perfect in a modern home or in a man cave.  This shelf will have a completely different look with a darker leather and it’s another super easy project idea.

Which one of those ideas is your favorite?  I’m a bit smitten with them all and I’m thinking I really have no more excuses not to add some shelves to my home!  I’ll keep you updated on which of these fun projects I try!

Fantastic ideas for made-to-measure shelves. I prefer them because are creative and personalised. 🙂
