I’m a bit smitten with poms poms and any crafts and home decor that are made with pom poms so it was only a matter of time before I tried my hand at a DIY pom pom rug.  Have you seen all the short videos on facebook showing people making them?  I can never resist watching them and finally finished this ongoing project!

DIY pom pom rug

My youngest daughter has dark wood floors in her room and a pom pom rug seemed like the perfect way to break up the dark color and add a bit of a whimsical element at the same time.  Who doesn’t want to wake up and sink their toes into a puffy pom pom rug?

To make one, you’ll need a rug pad or a rug hook canvas {the rug pad will grip the floor but the rug canvas is sturdier so decide what would work best for your space}, a pom pom maker in one or more sizes, and a variety of yarn.

If you don’t have a stash of yarn in coordinating colors, you can check out your local thrift store or hit up a craft store during yarn sales.  You’ll need quite a bit of yarn for this project!  Both thick and thin yarn will work but thick yarn can be made into pom poms much quicker and the thicker yarn also makes bulkier pom poms which fill in the rug faster.

Make a pile of pom poms in various colors and leave six inches or so of yarn when you tie off the middle.  You’ll use this to tie the pom poms onto the rug backing.

Once you’ve made all the pom poms, lay them out on the rug backing and determine whether you have enough to fill in all the gaps.

Be warned … it takes a lot of pom poms to make even a small rug and this isn’t necessarily a quick project unless you have a little team of elves helping with your pom poms!  I was lucky to have my Mom help out with the pom pom making for this rug but it still took quite a bit of time to make enough little balls to fill in the rug.

Begin tying the pom poms onto the rug backing, poking the pieces of string through and tying them in a knot on the back side.  Trim the ends to about half an inch.

As you’re tying, you may end up with a few more gaps so expect to make a few more pom poms to fill in spaces.  You’ll want to squish the pom poms fairly close together so none of the mat shows and so you don’t end up with much shifting as people step on the rug.

Once all the pom poms are in place, fluff them up a bit, and the rug is ready to go!

It adds such a fun pop of texture and color to a room and is the perfect spot for relaxing or reading a book.
