DIY Paint Brush Homemade Halloween Costume

It’s that time of year when I go crazy trying to come up with a fun homemade Halloween costume idea for my kiddos! This year, two of the kids went with pretty run of the mill costumes but Lila wore one of my DIY creations: a paint brush costume! She even won first place in our neighborhood fall festival costume contest!

This paint brush costume was made with dollar store items and things we already had and cost us a total of $3.  Not bad, huh?

How to Make a DIY Paint Brush Costume

Lila dressed in a solid color to represent the handle of the paint brush and then I made her a hat that looked like the top of a paint brush.  I cut a piece of poster board and spray painted it silver, then glued it to fit the size of her head.  I bought two brooms {with strong bristles} at the dollar store, cut the bristles off, and poked them into a round styrofoam disc.  I poked them in chunks so it didn’t take forever.  As I went along, I added a bit of hot glue to the point where the bristles poked into the styrofoam, just to give some added stability.  When the disc was full of bristles, I used hot glue to attach it to the inside of the poster board crown.

The final piece of the costume was a large paint palette.  I cut a palette shape from foam board, added a handle made from poster board to the back, and added paint splotches to the front.

This was such a simple homemade Halloween costume to make but I love that it’s original and unique!  The perfect costume for my little artist!
