Changing pillowcases frequently has been proven to help with skin care issues and acne but it can be so hard to remember to change the case or to flip the pillow over … and even to remember whether or not you did it that day! These DIY day of the week skin care or acne pillowcases take the guesswork out of it and ensure that you have a clean case on your pillow every night.
Why Should You Regularly Change Your Pillowcase?
If you think about everything that happens to a pillowcase each night {drool, sweat, makeup remnants, oils from your skin}, it makes sense that pillowcases should be changed frequently.
Dermatologists typically recommend changing pillowcases at least once a week but if you have skin care issues like acne or allergies, they recommend changing them more often.
How to Use Day of the Week Skin Care Pillowcases
These pillowcases have a day of the week label on each side of the hem. You use the pillow one night with the pillowcase turned up for the coordinating day, then flip it over the next night, then switch to a new pillowcase the next day.
If that’s confusing, let me explain. One pillow has Sunday on the hem and when you flip it over, the other side of the hem says Monday. Another pillow is labeled with Tuesday, Wednesday, and so on.
The labels ensure that you remember to switch it each day. My mom actually came up with this great idea and made an embroidered version … and I couldn’t resist making a version with my Cricut machine.
Supplies for DIY Skin Care or Acne Pillowcases
To complete this project, you’ll need four pillowcases. You can use a plain pillowcase or one that matches your bedding.
You’ll also need iron on heat transfer in a coordinating color. If you don’t want the text to stand out, you could choose a monochromatic look, like white on white, so that the text can be read but isn’t totally obvious.
How to Make DIY Skin Care or Acne Pillowcases
Using the text feature and a font you like in Cricut Design Space, type out each of the days of the week. I made the words about an inch in height but you could make them much smaller if you prefer it to be less obvious.
Send it to your Cricut machine, select the material you’re using {I used patterned iron on}, and don’t forget to mirror the project.
Place the heat transfer on a standard grip mat with the shiny side facing down.
Using weeding tools, weed all of the negative space around the words. If you haven’t used a brightpad before, it’ll make the job much easier!
To apply the words, slide an easypress mat into a pillowcase, use an easypress machine to preheat the material for 5 seconds, then center the word on the hem.
You could also put the word inside the hem or make it tiny if you prefer it to be less obvious.
With the easypress machine set for the material you’re using {these pillowcases are a polycotton blend so I set the machine to 340 degrees}, press firmly for 30 seconds {or another time recommended in the settings chart} …
… then flip the hem back and press the back side of the hem for another 15 seconds.
Let it sit for a minute until cool then remove the backing.
Repeat the process with each of the pillowcases, adding a day of the week to one side of the hem and adding the next day of the week to the other side of the hem before switching to a new pillowcase.
This is a really simple project but a great way to help teens with their skin care routine …
… and help keep skin clean and healthy!
