Crochet Topped Acorns

I love acorns.  I think they’re just the cutest things and so perfect for fall decorating.  A couple of years ago, I dyed real acorns and used them to decorate but this year I decided to decorate with crochet topped acorns, the faux kind!  They were quick to make and a simple TV-watching kind of craft … and they turned out so cute.  Let me show you how easy it is to make them!

crochet topped acorns

To make crochet topped acorns, you’ll need round wooden beads {ovals would work too but I didn’t love the egg shape}, liquid dye, thin yarn, and a small crochet hook.

Following the manufacturer’s directions, make a dye bath and color the wooden beads.  Leave them in the dye bath until they’re the color you want …

… and then let them dry completely.  I used yellow and orange dye but any color would be super cute.  I think I’m going to make some with bright, bold colors.

While the wooden balls are drying, crochet a single strand chain to make each top.  Now let me give you a little disclaimer: I actually don’t know how to crochet and I don’t know any of the terminology.  I’m a knitter {smile}.  But, a single strand chain {that may not be the right term} is so simple.  Crochet until the chain is about 14 inches long but don’t finish it off … you may need to shorten or lengthen it once you start gluing it on.

Dab a bit of hot glue onto the top of the wooden ball and attach the end of the chain then, using a thin line of hot glue, start attaching the chain in a spiral fashion …

… continuing until you get right to the center.  Add more length if needed or rip back to make it shorter.  When the length is just right, cut the yarn, pull the end through the last loop and hot glue it in place …

… leaving a little tail for the acorn stem.

Each acorn takes just a few minutes to make.  Plus, you can use these little crochet topped acorns every year and store them away during other seasons.

Scatter them on a mantel or along a table runner, use them as place cards {adorable!}, or fill a vase with them.  However you choose to use them, they’ll have a whimsical impact in your fall decor!

Cute idea! I haven’t tried to crochet in a long time but I think that I remember enough to make a few of these. 🙂

Great, great post! Many thanks for sharing this idea with us! It’s funny how all the easy things seem so complicated at first. But what can be more satisfying than having your own hand-made decorations for the holiday season?:)
We are glad to revisit your blog after your post on Felt Ball Rug last year…. Since then we worked hard for a rebranding. Would love to have your opinion on our new site. Happy Holidays!
