Colorful Backyard Makeover

This colorful backyard makeover was sponsored by our partner, Lowe’s.

I just finished a colorful backyard makeover and I’m so excited about this improved space!  We spend a lot of time outside during the summer months, either in our pool or relaxing nearby, grilling, toasting s’mores, and just enjoying the fresh air.  The backyard really becomes an additional living space for us.  In the last couple of years, our backyard has started to get a bit run down but with a few new items from Lowe’s and a little sweat, this space is now bright and cheery and will definitely be a favorite hangout in the months ahead.

Prior to this backyard refresh, our yard looked like this.  We had a seating area on our back patio but it was a bit of a mish-mash of colors and faded pillows.  The fence hiding the power boxes that sit in our yard {yuck} was falling down and broken apart and there just wasn’t anything that made the space feel inviting and comfortable.

I started the makeover by rebuilding the little fence.  I tore down the old, broken fence, and rebuilt a higher, cedar fence that fully hides the ugly power box and provides a much nicer focal point in the yard.  It’s amazing what a difference this easy DIY made to the overall feel in the yard.

It also provides a nice backdrop for our fire pit spot.  The fire pit had been sitting on the patio but it was crowded and looked out of place.

I decided we’d use it a lot more if I created a little spot under the back tree near the fence.  I bought a few large flower pots and turned them upside down to use as stools.

They add a bit of color and a bit of whimsy to the space …

… and they’re the perfect size for the little ones.

Plus, they can be easily sprayed down when sticky s’mores get a little out of hand.

I love the new fire pit station and I’m sure we’ll use it all summer long but my favorite spot is this little outdoor couch nestled under the string lights.

It looks quaint during the day but it’s just a little bit magical at night, lit up with soft lights.  I’m hoping to read a whole pile of books and magazines this summer, curled up in this sweet spot.

To hang the string lights, I stuck wood posts in pots on either side and planted around them, then used a staple gun to hold the wires on top of the posts.  I planted lavender in one pot …

… and a tall hibiscus plant in the other.  The height of the hibiscus helps close in the space and I love the flowers.

I’ve always wanted a hibiscus plant and can’t believe we’ve never had one until now!

To complete this space and really pull it together, I added a few more plants and herbs, a metal plant stand that I’m using as a side table, and a bunch of coordinating pillows.

I smile every time I walk outside.  It’s amazing what a difference a bit of color and some greenery can add to a yard.  And my once run-down space is now an area that I love.  I can’t wait to have friends over this summer for coffee on the patio, grilled meals in the evening, and lots and lots of s’mores!

I love your outdoor furnishings! So far I steer clear of cushions and such because I’m such a scatter brain they’d always be soaked from rain, but someday!

I feel like a klutz but are your lights solar powered? I have been looking for some but seem to be running into a dead end.
