My younger kids spend much of their time away from electronics, taking part in creative and imaginative play … and I love that and try to encourage it as much as I can! I enjoy creating things that push them further into that style of play and this cigar box doll house is my latest kid-friendly project.
I often look for wooden cigar boxes at flea markets and thrift stores but they can be hard to find. I just found out cigar stores sell them super cheap. This wooden cigar box was only two dollars at a local cigar shop {and paper cigar boxes were being sold for one dollar}. That kind of price makes this a very affordable project.
I removed the stickers as much as possible then sanded the rest off. Truthfully, I didn’t do a great job and you can still see sticker marks underneath the paint but my kids aren’t picky {smile}. I spray painted the outside of the box pink and screwed a carrying handle to the top of the box.
When the paint was entirely dry, I added a black vinyl door to the front …
… and bought a little dollar store doll to fit inside the cigar box doll house.
Then came the fun part: decorating the inside of the doll house. I used scrapbook paper to create wall paper for the doll house walls {I simply glued it on} …
… and created furniture and windows with my cutting machine and colorful vinyl. {These shapes can all be found on the Silhouette site.}
I created a living room with a polka dot sofa on one side …
… and a sitting area with a fabulous hanging pendant lamp {how cute is that?} on the other side.
My girls will have such a fun time playing with this doll house and creating cute scenarios …
… and when they’re finished, the doll fits easily inside, the box snaps closed, and this lightweight cigar box doll house can go with us anywhere.
If you decide to make your own cigar box doll house, I’d love to see what you do. Will you add fabric curtains or a fluffy rug? How about a bed with a sweet patterned quilt? Be sure to upload a picture to the Dukes and Duchesses facebook page!
Super cute!
