A Button Garland

I’m in a crafting mood this Christmas and since I’m loving the homemade side of the season I’ve been adding little handmade details to our Christmas decor.  This button garland couldn’t be any easier to make and it’s the perfect mindless craft to make while you’re watching Elf or another favorite Christmas movie.  I love the way it looks against the greenery.

To make a button garland, you’ll obviously need a pile of buttons.  Craft stores carry bags of buttons and I chose one with a variety of red.  They’re not all the same but I think that adds to the whimsical nature of the garland.  You could also skip the monotone idea and use bright-colored buttons in all different colors.  Really, anything would be cute!

You’ll also need something to string with.  I used a linen/cotton blend yarn but you could use twine or embroidery thread as well.  Whatever you use, you’ll want it to be something that doesn’t unravel easily and something that slides easily through the button holes.

String each button individually onto the string or yarn, spacing them as desired.  I left two finger widths between each of my buttons.  If the yarn is textured enough, the buttons will stay where you place them.  If not, tie a small knot on either side of the button to hold it in place.

If the buttons have four holes, string through two holes across from each other.

I told you it couldn’t be easier!  This would even be a fun project to do with the kids {and a great way to keep them busy during Christmas break!}.
