Back to Basics :: Jump Rope

Each month, I’ve been sharing a Back to Basics post: games and activities {and a coordinating DIY project} that don’t require any electronics but just encourage the kids to get outside and be kids.  This month, it’s all about jump rope.  And who wouldn’t love to jump rope with a rope that has glitter handles?

To make a jump rope with glitter handles, you’ll need a dollar store jump rope, Mod Podge, glitter, and a foam brush.

Using the foam brush, apply a coat of Mod Podge to the plastic handles of the jump rope and shake glitter on it until the handles are completely covered.  Allow the handles to dry completely {I set them on top of nails sticking out of a board} and then cover the glitter with another coat of Mod Podge.  This will prevent the glitter from coming off on the kids’ hands.

Once the handles are completely dry, it’s time to jump rope!

Jump rope is the perfect back to basics game because it can be done alone or with friends, with one rope or two, for fun or for exercise.  Remember jumping rope as a kid?  I spent hours outside with a rope in my hand!

Here’s a simple rhyme to teach the kids:
Cinderella, dressed in yellow
Went upstairs to kiss her fellow
Made a mistake
And kissed a snake
How many doctors did it take?
1, 2, 3, 4, 5 ….

Did you recite that one as a kid?

And for those that love to jump rope with a friend, here’s a sweet rhyme:
I like coffee,
I like tea,
I’d like {insert child’s name}
to jump in with me!

Grab those kids, glitter up a jump rope, and spend the afternoon outside jumping rope!

I love this, my girls like to jump rope, they would love to have glitter handles, thanks for sharing! I found your blog from watching the Mom Blog To Money Blog videos you did with Holly Homer! I’ve been considering taking the course, would you recommend it? I’ve enjoyed looking at your blog, you have a lot of great ideas, I’m pinning this one! Thanks!

The course was great, Nicci. It’s full of really helpful information, especially in terms of advertising and how to work that. There’s also a G+ community where you can ask questions and get help.

I’m guessing the girl in the pictures has very tough feet, that driveway surface looks like it would be a little hard on bare feet.
