This weekend, Kennedy’s celebrating her birthday with friends. Rather than a party, she’s meeting her friends at a trendy, local coffee shop where they’ll drink fancy coffee, eat cake, and talk … a party that’s right up my alley {wink}. We’re sending the girls home with a small homemade party favor: Anthropologie-inspired DIY monogrammed mugs. Unlike the many mugs made with Sharpie markers, these mugs are made with a bit different technique.
I love the different monogrammed mugs at Anthropologie {they’re one of my favorite things to look for at the thrift store} and we decided that a DIY version would make a sweet take-home favor.
Since it’s really hard to replicate the font on the Anthro mugs, these monogrammed mugs are a loose interpretation … but still really cute!
How to Make Monogrammed Mugs Without Sharpies
We started with simple white mugs from the dollar store. We were unable to get the number we needed all in one style so we mixed two different styles.
The only other supply needed is a black DecoArt glass paint marker.
Draw the monogram onto the mug and add embellishments as desired.
These paint markers are so easy to use and if you make a mistake, don’t worry! The design can be wiped off and you can start over.
The longer the design sits on the mug, the harder it gets to remove it but I was able to completely remove a ten-minute old design with a bit of water and hard rubbing.
Don’t worry about creating a perfect monogram. The whimsy of the hand-drawing makes it really cute.
How to Make Writing on a Mug Permanent
When the designs are complete on the mugs, bake the mugs at 375 degrees for 40 minutes. This sets the paint marker.
Let the mugs cool completely.
Once the mugs have been baked, the monograms will be permanent and dishwasher-safe.
We packaged coffee-flavored candies in cellophane bags and placed them inside for a final sweet touch {pun intended} to the favor.
This simple craft idea took very little time to make and would make a cute gift for any occasion, even a gift for men.
Have you tried monogramming a mug?

Did you use a stencil for these amazing mugs? I have wanted to do this, but I am not that great at free hand.
Randi Dukes says
I just free-handed them. The great thing about these pens is that you can wipe them off if you mess up … and then redo it.

Could you tell me where you find the DecoArt glass marker pens? Also how can I save this to make at a later time.I thought this would make a great extra gift for Christmas gifts next year.thank you.
Randi Dukes says
Gail, you should be able to find those markers at most local craft stores: Michaels, Hobby Lobby, JoAnn. And to save it, you could pin it if you’re on pinterest.

Thank you for sharing this! I have been wanting to do something like this for awhile and wasn’t sure how to make it stay on the glass. For certain things (like this) I’m not good with trial and error, so thank you thank you! I am now looking forward to trying my hand, and just in time for a gift for Valentine’s day.

I love this!! I have been wanting to do this, but wasn’t sure the best kind of marker to use. Can’t wait to get started 🙂

I love your mugs and can’t wait to try those markers from DecoArt!
Dee Williamson says
My excuse for wanting the marker: Hey honey, you did say you wanted new coffee mugs… I so need to try this!

I {really} LOVE this! I’m hosting a Sharpie crafts link party on my blog this week, and I’d love it if you wanted to link up! Favorites will be featured in a compilation post next week, & we’re giving away a $50 Target GC and Sharpie prize pack!

So I don’t have a DecoArt Glass Paint pen, but I do have this paint pen that claims it’s good for ceramic. How did your mugs hold up?
Randi Dukes says
They held up great! Totally dishwasher safe and no fading. If it’s good for ceramics and you bake it after, it should be permanent.
char says
Beautiful! What font did u use.i want to look up the rest of the alphabet?
Randi Dukes says
I just sort of made it up as I went along. If you look up a block type font, you might be able to mimic that. Sorry I’m not more help!
Andrea Hando says
Are these also microwave safe?
Randi Dukes says
As long as the mug is microwave safe, it should be fine.
Andrea Hando says
Are these paints safe to drink out of if painted on the inside?
Randi Dukes says
I really don’t know. You may want to google it and see what it says about the toxicity of the pens.
