Christmas Cookie Countdown

I went through the old photo albums {yep, albums} and dug up some old photos to share a fun countdown idea for Christmas.  Years ago {the year 1999, to be exact}, I made a Christmas cookie countdown for Elijah, who was just a toddler at the time.  While neither the photos nor the cookies are at all picture perfect {blogs were unheard of back then!}, I thought you might enjoy seeing this fun idea.  Inspiration can be gleaned even from a bad photo, right {smile}?

To make this cookie countdown, I baked twenty-four large snowflake shaped sugar cookies and, using a straw, made a hole in the top of each one before baking.  I iced them very simply with a bit of white icing and large red numbers, but you could do all sorts of fancy designs if you want to.  I think if I made something similar again I’d get a bit more decorative with the cookies.

I strung Christmas-colored ribbons through the holes, and hung the cookies at all different levels from our kitchen curtain rod {I removed the valance for the month of December}. The valance idea worked well but you could hang the cookies from anything.  Wouldn’t they look great hanging from a vintage ladder?

Each day we’d take down the cookie with the corresponding number and Elijah would eat it.

It was such a pretty display and a really fun {and sweet} way to count down to Christmas.

Would your kids love a Christmas cookie countdown?
