I’ve become a bit smitten with my wood burning tool lately and I thought it might be fun to make some rustic wood burned gift tags that can be used for Father’s Day or any holiday.  The sky’s the limit with these tags … you can add your own twist and get as creative as you want.

wood burned gift tags

Start with small wood pieces or wood tags.  These are easily found at your local craft store.  Drill a hole in them if you want to be able to tie them on to a package or just leave them the way they are.  They can be attached to a gift with a dab of glue or a piece of tape or they can be tucked under a piece of ribbon wrapped around the present.

To create the designs, you’ll use a hot wood burning tool {affiliate link}.  A tool with a variety of tips works best so you can choose different widths of lines and tips that will create different designs.

On each piece of wood, use the wood burning tool to create the name …

… then add designs as desired.  To create perfectly straight lines, use a metal ruler and slide the wood burning tip right alongside it.  Try not to worry about perfection.  Using a wood burning tool is a little tricky but I think the imperfections add to the final result.

You can also use a stencil like I did with this wood grain tag.  If the stencil is plastic, be careful not to brush right up against the edges of it or it’ll melt.

Have fun with this project!  The final rustic result will look great.
