It feels a bit early to be thinking about Christmas ornaments but the holiday season will be here before we know it and I want you to be prepared {wink}! I’ve joined with thirty other bloggers to bring you a handmade ornament every day this month. Today, I’m sharing a tutorial for a wood burned cross-stitch Christmas ornament that has a homespun feel and is really simple and quick to make.
To make a faux cross-stitch ornament, start with a wooden tag from the craft store and draw a grid with pencil. Be sure to draw very lightly or it will be difficult to fully erase {you can still see some of my grid showing on the ornament}.
Using a wood burning tool {affiliate link} and a straight edge, make X’s in each square, forming a pattern. I chose to make a simple snowflake pattern but you could make a Christmas tree or any other traditional Christmas shape.
When all the X’s are in place, use an eraser to remove the pencil lines on the ornament. With a small drill bit, make a small hole in the top of the tag and feed a ribbon or a piece of tulle through it to form a hanger.
So simple, right? You can make a whole pile of these ornaments in very little time and enjoy a homespun, country style tree this Christmas!

It’s time to pull out my wood burner – this is cute! Pinning!
Wow! You are gifted. Don’t know that I have the patience for that. I love the look!
Randi… you always amaze me with your creativity. When I was doing woodworking I used a woodburner for a couple of projects and have long forgotten it. I love this idea… your ornament is absolutely adorable!
Thanks so much for being a part of our blog hop. 🙂
These are really sweet. It’s nice to see another use for a woodburner too, it’s the kind of equipment that can get used a lot when it’s new, then left at the back of the cupboard after a little while!
I’m so glad that you posted this cute ornament. I recently got a woodburner and this will be a great project to use it for.
Super darling idea, Randi!
A wood-burner’s been in my list of things I want to buy. Your cute project just makes me want to go and buy it now! So many possibilities, love it!
Now I need a wood burner! Love your idea! So creative!

This is such a great idea and could easily be adapted to any design! I could see these being used as gift tags as well. Thanks for sharing.
This is such a unique idea, Randi, and so pretty!
Adorable! I got a little wood burner last year and have had a hard time finding projects for it! You’ve given me just the right one! xo
Oh wow, these are beautiful! Pinned
Such pretty woodwork on the ornament. I have never seen this before. I guess I am not that crafty after all. The result is certainly beautiful.
I love this idea! It’s such an unusual, rustic ornament! Found you at a linky, new follower!
Love this idea, Randi! It has such a sweet rustic vibe to it!
