This upcycled vintage painting idea is one I’ve wanted to try for a while. I’ve seen many versions over the years and knew it would be a fun way to repurpose an old painting that used to hang in my house when I was growing up. It’s the perfect way to transform an old thrift store painting to add a bit of whimsy to your home!
To make this updated wall decor, start with an old painting. I left the painting in the frame and painted the entire thing but you could remove the painting from the frame if you want to paint them separately.
Using a cutting machine, cut your text from vinyl, filling as much or as little of the picture as you’d like.
Using transfer paper, apply the text to the painting …
… and spray paint the entire thing in your choice of color. You’ll likely need to apply a few coats to fully cover the painting and frame.
Remove the vinyl letters to reveal the painting underneath …
… and hang it up! Our house has a few very weirdly placed hooks on the outside of doors and I hung this whimsical bit of art on a door in our butler’s pantry.
It leans out from the hook and reminds me of art pieces hanging in my grandparent’s home.
This upcycled vintage painting is so fun and can be customized any way you want.
What word or words would you use on your sign?

I love this idea! There are probably plenty of pictures at the thrift store that have beautiful parts. This is a way to highlight those beautiful parts and literally cover over the not so great parts! Posts like this are perfect for Waste Less Wednesday blog hop!

I know I will now be making one of these soon. I love the idea of hanging it on a door as well, how can you be grumpy when you look at a bright yellow SMILE sign, right? lol
Thanks for sharing 🙂
