Upcycled Necktie Lampshade

I decided after recently painting Kennedy’s lamp, that the shade needed something as unique as an upcycled necktie lampshade! I came across this fun idea and knew it was just the answer to add a really unique touch to a tween room.

I hit up all my local thrift stores for super cheap ties in shades of browns, teals, and blues {the colors of Kennedy’s room after her recent room makeover}.  Ties are so common at thrift stores and they’re generally really inexpensive.  You may have to hit up a few different stores to find enough ties in the right shades but you shouldn’t have any trouble finding them.

{My favorite tie on the lampshade is a navy Giorgio Armani tie.  I had no idea it was a designer tie until I hacked off the end of it!}

You’ll only need enough to cover the lamp shade so the number really depends on how big your lampshade it.  You can use a lampshade that you already have or find a cheap one at a local craft store or thrift store.

I hot glued the ties to the lampshade, trimming off the long, thin tail of the tie, folding the tie over the top of the shade and tacking it into place with more hot glue.

You’ll need to make sure there are no loose ends inside the shade that could get close to the bulb and cause a problem.  Safety is obviously super important.

The finished repurposed necktie lampshade looks really cute in Kennedy’s updated tween room and adds a fun upcycled and very whimsical tone to her space.

    I like the new lampshade. Has anyone tried to make a throw pillow using old ties? I have 3 generations of ties & would love to make 2 that I could pass on to my children as family heirloom tradition. Thanks,John

      I haven’t seen one but that would make an amazing DIY. I may have to add that to my project list!
