I’ve been browsing through thrift stores this fall {a favorite pastime} and every single store has piles of leaf-shaped glass dishes for sale. They must have been all the rage at some point and have clearly gone out of style. Fairly nondescript, I walked right by a few piles and then had a revelation that with a little paint, a plain glass plate could be transformed into a silver painted leaf charger. I bought a set of six {for less than a dollar a piece} and hustled out of the thrift store and home to the spray paint stash.
The clear glass plates were all in great shape and I really liked the simple details and lines. They just needed a little something to make them stand out on a table and really make those details pop.
Since painting the tops of the plates would mean they were no longer food safe {and I want to actually use them}, I turned them over and spray painted only the back of each plate. I opted to use silver spray paint since I’m loving the metallic trends this fall but I may grab another set and paint them in a bright color for a whole different look. Copper would be really amazing too, wouldn’t it?
Once the plates were dry, they were ready for a tablescape. With just a few dollars, one coat of spray paint, and an hour of drying time, these leaf plates took on an entirely different look!
They now stand out against my white dishes and add a fun look for fall. They’re perfect for fall entertaining or to use as a salad plate on Thanksgiving. And while I doubt the paint will stand up to the dishwasher, they’ll be just fine with hand washing.
I love giving new life to thrift store treasures!
