Painting with Chalk-Finish Paint {My Kitchen Benches}

A couple of days ago I shared my fun new dining area makeover.  I added some design accessories and elements to the space but the painted benches are my very favorite part of the makeover!  Today I’ll give you a little more detail about these benches.

My bench project started with simple, sturdy benches from the Better Homes and Gardens line at Walmart.  I loved the simplicity of the benches but wanted something a bit more colorful and I knew these benches would match my vision perfectly with a quick coat of chalk-finish paint.

I still haven’t splurged and tried storebought chalk paint … I’m a bit cheap, huh?  Instead, I mixed a batch of DIY chalk-finish paint using a turquoise satin paint {the color is Behr Tropical Tide}.

Before I assembled the benches, I painted all the pieces with my DIY chalk-finish paint and, once dry, added a second coat to cover any spots I had missed.

When the paint was dry, I chose not to distress the benches at all but I did rub them down with dark brown wax.  I let it sit for a few minutes and then buffed it, giving the benches a darker tone that looks great with my dark table.

I love my chalk-finish painted benches!  They look really fun in our kitchen, adding a great pop of color and whimsy, and they also provide a couple of extra spots for little people … perfect for our family!

    Randi,
    Where did you get that table? It’s a perfect size.
    Thanks!

    I’m behind and just saw the post where you said your husband built the table. 🙂

      It really is a perfect size, isn’t it, Melissa? I love it. It was Phil’s first building project and it turned out really great!

    I love what you did to the bench! I too am needing one. Great idea!! Love your chairs! Where did you get those and did you paint them yourself?

      Those chairs are from Room Store … quite a number of years ago. And they were already painted like that. I’ve been thinking about repainting them but I still like the colors and the distressed look.
