Knit Mason Jar Cozy

I haven’t been doing a lot of knitting lately but this weekend I dug out the needles and whipped up a knit mason jar cozy.  It adds texture {and color, if you want} to a plain old mason jar and is a great, warm look for fall and winter.

I hit up my yarn stash for a cream-colored yarn and mixed it with plain string to give it a little more texture and body.  I was actually hoping the string would be a bit more prominent than it is but I still like the texture it gave to the cozy.

Since I love to avoid seams that need to be sewn at the end, I knit the mason jar cozy in the round.  Cast enough stitches to wrap around the jar without being too tight or too loose.  How many stitches you’ll need will depend on the yarn you use and the size of the mason jar.  I cast on 40 stitches and it was just right for a large jar.

I didn’t knit a rib at the top or the bottom, just started knitting and stopped when the length was right.  The edges roll slightly, which I like.  If you don’t want the edges to roll, you can knit a short ribbed section at the top and bottom.

Sew in the loose ends and slip the cozy onto a mason jar.  This cozy is perfect on the large mason jar that holds my vintage piano keys.  I love the mix of textures.

I’m already casting on to knit a few more mason jar cozies.  Wouldn’t a row of flower-filled, covered mason jars be fun for a dinner party?

This is a perfect “experiment with your stash” kind of idea. I watch a lot more tv once the evenings start drawing in, I need plenty of “easy to do whilst watching” projects on the go so I don’t feel like I’m wasting time, this would be perfect.
