Duct Tape Pocket

I’ve been inspired by the beautiful new line of Duck Brand Duck Tape to come up with some fun projects and this simple, colorful duct tape pocket is my latest little project!  It’s perfect for all those trinkets that kids love as well as a great way to wrap a small gift or gift card.

Two of my nieces have birthdays coming up and so I came up with this cute {and reusable} way to wrap their gifts.  {The gifts I needed to wrap are small so these pockets are only about four inches high.  The pattern could be adapted to make any size pocket.}  I love it when you can make the gift wrap part of the gift and the kids can actually use the package again.

How to Make a Duct Tape Pocket

To make the duct tape pocket, lay two strips side by side, sticky side up {base your length on the finished size of the pocket … the length needs to include the front, the back, and the flap}.

Lay short strips {in a contrasting color} all the way up, covering the long strips completely and very slightly overlapping the contrasting color.

Trim the edges with scissors to get rid of the torn edges.  You’ll be left with a rectangle with the duct tape running opposite directions on each side.

Fold the bottom up just a bit more than a third, and rip a strip of tape the length of the front panel.  Cut that piece of tape in half lengthwise so you have two pieces.

Fold the pieces over the side edges to close the pocket.

Trim the front tab into a V-shape …

… and add adhesive velcro dots to the pocket.  You may want to attach them with a dab of hot glue if they don’t seem to be sticking well.

So easy to make and I think they turned out really cute.

I’m pretty sure I’ll be making more duct tape pockets to hold gift cards or to use as little money purses.

And isn’t that zig zag/chevron print cute?  If you want to buy some, this month the new prints should be available in AC Moore, Hobby Lobby, Joann, Michaels, Meijer, Fred Meyer, and Walmart.

What if you just use coordinating strips of tape right over top of it to hold it against the side of the bag?

Velcro it to the inside of the bag, so it can be removable.
