A few weeks ago, I was wandering through a local store and I saw the cutest fabric laces in all different patterns!  I instantly added it to my mental project list.  DIY fabric shoelaces are a really simple craft project and a great way to use up some of that fabric stash … and if you’re anything like me, you’ve got a LOT of extra fabric in that stash!

To make DIY fabric shoelaces, you’ll need cotton fabric in any pattern or color, a rotary cutter, an acrylic ruler, and a cutting mat.

It’s important that these shoelaces are made by cutting the fabric on the bias.  This will allow the fabric to stretch a bit but will also minimize the fraying along the edges of the laces.

There are great tutorials online and on YouTube for folding fabric in a specific manner to cut it on the bias.  Rather than reinventing the wheel here, I’d recommend you find one of those tutorials or simply lay the fabric out and cut it on the bias without folding it.  {If you’re unsure what I mean by cutting fabric on the bias, Ashley has a great post with definitions.}

Cut the fabric one inch wide and about 40-42 inches long {in one solid piece} for a regular five-eyelet shoe.  If your shoe has more or less eyelets, you may want to lengthen or shorten the piece of fabric as you see fit.

… and tie a bow, just as you would with any laces.

These patterned fabric shoelaces are the perfect idea for both kids and adults and can be changed out easily for a completely different look.  You could even make some fun ones for the different seasons or holidays!

Would you wear fabric laces in your shoes?
