Bedroom Update: DIY Dream Pillow and Mattress Upgrade

This is a sponsored post for Dorel Home Products.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.

We’re in the middle of making some changes in my middle daughter’s bedroom and one of those changes includes a mini makeover for her bed!  In addition to this whimsical DIY dream pillow that Lila designed herself, she’s also sleeping much more comfortably on a new from Walmart!

When Lila first moved into a bed as a toddler, I found a fabulous vintage bed frame and bought a super cheap {and somewhat uncomfortable} twin mattress for her bed.  I hauled it home, tied to the top of the car, lugged it upstairs, and hated the entire process.  I had visions of that crazy mattress flying off the top of the car while I sailed down the freeway.  You can relate, can’t you?  And I had it easy with a twin mattress!  The day I hauled home a king sized mattress was the day I decided I’d never buy a new mattress again {wink}!

Thankfully, those days are gone!  I no longer have to decide between paying an expensive delivery charge or strapping a mattress to the top of the car.  Now, you can buy a mattress online and get it delivered right to your door!

We got the 8 inch mattress, available only at Walmart, for Lila’s bed.  The delivery man left the box on my front porch {you can also pick up at Walmart if you prefer} …

… and I simply carried it upstairs.  That’s mattress buying at its best, isn’t it?

All we had to do was open up the box …

… and slide it out.

I carefully cut the outer layer of plastic …

… and the mattress went from flat to this expanded version in no time at all!  It was so fun to watch!  The instructions say that it can take 48 hours to get back to its full size but the mattress appeared thick and comfortable in just minutes!

And then all I had to do was lift it on to the bed!

Lila had been sleeping on a pretty thin, old mattress {the National Sleep Foundation recommends replacing a mattress every ten years} so this new 8 inch mattress is a dream {excuse the pun!}.  It’s so comfortable and is a great value for the price.

And, of course, we couldn’t resist making a cute little DIY pillow to top the new mattress!  Lila came up with this dream design herself and I thought it was such a cute idea!

We bought a pre-made pillow cover and pillow insert at our local craft store and I used my Cricut to cut the design out of silver glitter heat transfer.

I adhered it to the pillow cover, inserted the pillow, and that was it: a customized pillow in just minutes!

Lila’s sleeping in style and comfort with her new mattress … and I love that the whole process couldn’t have been simpler!

This looks like an easy way to buy a mattress. We need to buy a new one for ourselves – and I would love to have it this easy! Will definitely be checking this mattress out at Wal-Mart. Ya gotta love the easy way even mattresses can be purchased today. We’ve actually left mattresses from places we’ve moved to avoid trying to lug them down the stairs!

We bought a similar such mattress that arrived in a small box. The kids were beyond blown away when the mattress “exploded” out of the box!! Cute dream pillow too. Visiting from Home Matters party.
