DIY Citronella Candle

After piles of rain in Texas, we’ve been dealing with swarms of mosquitoes.  I’m combating them every way I can and a DIY citronella candle is a great way to keep the bugs away while outside.  And they couldn’t be easier to make.

DIY citronella candle

I wanted an interesting container for my candle so I used a small vintage loaf pan.  Almost anything will work and it’s always fun to think outside the box.

Using a double boiler system {a pan over a pan of water with the heat on medium to medium low}, melt candle wax.  Candle wax of any variety can be found in your local craft store.  Beeswax, soy, or regular candle wax all work equally well.

While the wax is melting {be sure to keep a close eye on it}, create a wick.  Use string or wick material and hold it above the container by tying the end to a skewer.  I made a double wick for this long candle so I tied both ends to a skewer and left the middle of the string lying across the bottom of the loaf pan.

When the wax has melted completely, pour it slowly into the container being careful not to disturb the position of the wick.  Add 20-25 drops of citronella essential oil.

Let the wax harden completely then use your DIY citronella candle any time you’re sitting or dining outdoors.  The scent will keep mosquitoes at bay and let you enjoy the great outdoors!

Looks much easier than I thought it would be. Here in Florida we have to deal with the pesky mosquitos year round! I like your idea of using a unique container better than the bland, same as, same as containers that everyone has! I would sure love it if you would come by and share this at my new link party on Sunday! I hope your new candle keeps the mosquitos at bay!
