Basketball Cake

Today I’m sharing this fun but oh-so-simple basketball cake with you!  Luke and Lila’s basketball season ended this weekend and yesterday we hosted the team party at our house.  Twenty-five people were here for pizza and cake and this cake was the highlight of the party!

basketball cake

To make this easy basketball cake, I baked a two-layer cake from a cake mix, stacked the layers together with icing in between, and frosted the cake with orange-tinted icing {I used store bought icing and just added food coloring to tint it}.

The simple basketball pattern was easy to replicate and the Reese’s Pieces party pack had more than enough candies to cover the cake.  I made the brown lines first, making horizontal and vertical lines down the middle and then adding the curved lines.  Once the lines were in place, I filled the rest of the cake in with orange pieces.

In order to feed the whole party crowd, I served a batch of cupcakes as well but this cake was the true star.

I love nothing more than a simple cake that has a huge cute factor … and this one definitely fits that description!

Love this Randi! One week too late for our basketball party – I would have been a rock star at our banquet last week…there is always next year!

I love the simplicity of this cake, yet it is so creative. This is a great cake to show that a little bit of effort goes a long way! I bet it tasted pretty good too 🙂

I think yours looks better than the inspiration cake! Adding Reese’s pieces sounds even more delicious than just icing.
