Elephant Taggy Blanket

One of my blogging friends is having her first baby, a little girl, in December.  She’s decorating the nursery in yellow and gray tones and pulling elephants into the mix.  I decided to sew a cute elephant taggy blanket as a gift for little Baby Emily.

I didn’t use a pattern for this little travel-sized blanket but it’s easy enough to piece together if you have basic sewing skills.

I found an elephant shape online and traced it onto fabric.  I used a soft gray minky fabric for one side …

… and on the other side, I used yellow and gray damask fabric from the Joel Dewberry Aviary line {Jana’s using this fabric in her nursery}.

I placed the two elephant pieces on top of each other, right sides together, and stitched them together, leaving a gap for turning.  I turned it right side out, stitched up the hole, then edge stitched all around the elephant.

I used a small piece of yellow polka dot fabric from my fabric stash to make the elephant ear.

I used ribbon pieces {also from my craft stash} to make the tags.  I sewed the ear shape together with the ribbon pieces pinned in between then turned the ear right side out and stitched the edge of it onto the minky side of the elephant.

I stitched the ear on after sewing the front and back elephant pieces together but if you don’t want that seam to show on the back you can sew the ear on the front piece of fabric before sewing the two pieces together.  Does that make sense?

It’s always such fun, welcoming a new little one to the world and I hope she’ll enjoy this little taggy blanket that matches her nursery!
