A Salvaged Corner Chair

A year or so ago, I rescued a legless corner-style chair from a friend’s garbage pile.  It’s sat in my garage all this time, waiting for new legs.  This past weekend I decided to finish it up and this salvaged corner chair is now part of a quaint little reading spot in my home!

The chair came to me looking a bit grungy and missing legs.  I’m not sure what this piece did in its original life because it looks as though it was actually the corner of a much larger bench.  The seat has small pieces that stick off each side and there are holes that make it look like it must have been attached to something else at some point.  It’s quite a whimsical little piece and no less so now that I’ve finished enhancing it!

Rather than cutting my own legs, I opted to buy parson legs at my local hardware store.  While I initially wanted much larger, boxy legs, the bottom of the chair made that a bit difficult.  There are so many pieces running across the bottom that I couldn’t place the legs where I wanted them without doing a lot of extra cutting.  And with extra cutting came extra chances that things wouldn’t fit well and the chair would lose its stability.  Instead of risking that, I stuck with regular two-inch diameter legs and cut them to 16.5 inches in length.

Since the chair legs came with an attached screw in the top, I drilled a small hole into the bottom of the chair to accommodate that screw then used my mini Kreg jig {affiliate link} to create pocket holes in each leg and screwed the legs into place.  {Want a simple trick?  In order to mark the exact spot to drill the first screw hole, I colored the top of the screw with a sharpie and then pressed it against the chair bottom in the exact place I wanted it.  The sharpie transferred from the screw to the chair bottom, marking the exact spot I needed to drill.}

Because of all the planks on the bottom of the chair, I was unable to place the legs at the edge but placed them as close to the edge as I could.

I spray painted the chair heirloom white {by Rustoleum} and moved it into its new spot in the house.

It’s a bit quirky looking but different and kind of fun …

… and it’s perfect for the reading spot I created in this space!

    Cute! (It was the corner piece of an L-shaped bench for her kitchen table.)

      So good to know … I don’t ever remember it as one piece!
