DIY IKEA Hack Lego Table

Having a lego table for the kids to work on makes play time so convenient {and helps corral the mess} but buying a regular lego table can be really expensive.  This super easy DIY IKEA hack lego table is fairly inexpensive to make and takes just a few minutes of time!  And because it’s so light, it can easily be moved around to different areas of your home.

DIY IKEA hack lego table

Luke is about to turn four and I thought a lego table would be a fun gift for him. He loves to build and I love the idea of giving him a confined spot special place {wink} for his hobby. Since the table will go in his bedroom I didn’t want something very large. I also didn’t want something very expensive. I decided making my own table would be a super simple and cheap alternative.

How to Make a Lego Table

To make the lego table, I bought a small white Lack side table at IKEA {on sale for only $7.50}.  The tables come in a few different colors and can be assembled in just minutes by screwing the four legs onto the base.

If you’re looking for something larger, I believe there’s also a Lack coffee table that is about the same width but longer.

I also bought four blue ten-inch lego base plates.  The base plates will be the most expensive part of this project but it will still be cheaper than buying a ready-made table.

How to Glue the Base Plates on a Lego Table

I cleaned off the top of the table, made sure it was completely dry, then used glue to adhere the lego base plates to the top of the table, lining them up equal distances from the edges.

A glue gun will probably work fine to adhere the base plates but if you expect a lot of rough play, it’s probably better to use a product like E6000 or gorilla glue.  A product like that will ensure the base plates will stay securely in place.

If the top of the table is shiny and super smooth, you may also want to rough it up with a bit of fine grit sandpaper before gluing the plates in place.

Allow the glue to dry completely and the IKEA hack lego table is ready for hours of fun building and creating!

Totally great idea! And don’t be expecting to get rid of it anytime soon! We had ours for years and still would except it had the medium sized bumps.

Have I ever told you how brilliant you are?!? I have an extra Lack table in my garage (wouldn’t fit in the new house) and a son that wishes he had a table to build Legos on. Now… to order some base plates! 🙂 Brilliant!

Great minds think alike. We have two black Lack tables that I’d already planned to do the same thing with — just need to go to the Lego store for the plates. Bub had a bigger Lego table, but it was really worn and it took up too much room, so I put it out for bulk trash at the beginning of the month. Question: what kind of adhesive did you use?

AWWW… my son, who is 21 years old now, was a Lego fiend. I wish I would have thought about doing this project back when. Great job.

I love this idea and am working on making a Lego table for my three kiddos, but I am curious what kind of adhesive you used to secure the base plates and have they held up well?

I bought all the pieces for this project today. So excited to make it for my boys. Like many of the others, can you tell me what type of adhesive you used? Thanks!

I just updated the post … not sure why I didn’t do that LONG ago. 🙂 I used a regular glue gun and it’s held up so well but if you want something stronger, I’d use E6000.
