DIY Duct Tape Backpack Bag

I shared this DIY duct tape backpack bag on another site recently and I wanted to share it here for anyone that missed it.  It’s a fun and easy back to school craft and is the perfect little pocket for storing lunch money or special trinkets!

My little guy loves the duct tape wallets that he’s seen so I thought this might be a fun alternative for him.  I picked flaming duct tape sheets as the material of choice for the main part of the bag and also used plain black duct tape for the edges.

To make the backpack bag, start with a short zipper.  Since I tend to be a bit cheap thrifty, I used a zipper from my notions stash.  It was the wrong size so I cut it to the length I wanted, leaving some extra zipper tape on the sides,  and used hot glue at the end to stop the zipper pull from sliding right off.  {If you’re using a regular zipper rather than a hefty one, you can sew right across the stopping point instead of using hot glue.}

Cut two rectangles from sheets of duct tape {these rectangles measured 5 3/4 inches by 4 inches} and back them, sticky side to sticky side, with another color duct tape {I used regular duct tape for this part rather than sheets but you could also use sheets}.

Trim any excess from the edges.

Using a regular sewing machine, sew the zipper onto the long side of the rectangles, using a straight stitch.  {This is a bit tricky so don’t look too closely at my sloppy seam.}

With right sides facing out, use pieces of duct tape to wrap the remaining three edges closed.

Following manufacturer’s instructions in a grommet kit, add a grommet to the corner of the bag.  I added it to a bottom corner but you may want to add it to a top corner so the bag doesn’t hang upside down on the backpack.

Once you’ve completed that step, the bag is finished.

Use a carabiner clip to attach the bag to your child’s backpack and fill it up with lunch money, a special snack, a note from mom, or a show and tell treasure.

However you use it, it makes a convenient storage spot!
