5 Decorating Tips and Tricks

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Havertys. The opinions and text are all mine.

In recent years, I’ve stopped trying to make my home look perfect to others and I’ve started embracing my style so my home looks perfect to me.  It may never appear in a magazine but it’s a comfortable haven for family and friends.  How did I get to that point?  By following these 5 decorating tips and tricks. {All photos and inspiration seen below are from the Havertys website.  Click on the source links below for direct links.}

5 decorating tips and tricks

1.  Use larger furniture as staples in your decor then accessorize with smaller pieces.

We have a very large brown leather sectional that will stay in our house until it falls apart.  It fits well in our large family room but more importantly, it fits our large family.  To tone down the dark couch and make it feel cozy, I’ve added bright toss pillows that contrast and coordinate, smaller chairs that create ambiance, and fun wall decor that suits our style. {source}

2.  Be creative in incorporating new styles and trends into your decor.

Most people don’t have the money {or the desire} to transform their home with every new style but you can incorporate new trends and styles into your decor in creative ways.  Paint a wall with a vibrant pattern, add cushions or a rug in trendy prints, and use trendy colors in accessories like candleholders and frames. {source}

3.  Don’t be afraid to mix and match styles.

My home is an eclectic mix of vintage, contemporary, repurposed and DIY.  Those styles don’t sound like they would blend well but they do and our home is a reflection of our style.  If you aren’t sure where to begin, buy basic furniture that works well with any style and add other pieces and accessories as you discover what you like. {source}

4.  Embrace color.

I love color and have used it in surprising ways in my home {a bright yellow hallway, an orange hallway, a blue butler’s pantry, and an apple green laundry room}.  Bright color doesn’t appeal to everyone but some color is a great way to add cheer to your home.  Color doesn’t have to be a commitment: add a bouquet of bright flowers to the table, spray paint a bright picture frame, or put a bright-colored throw on the couch. {source}

5.  Buy what you love and blend it into your decor.

Have you ever seen a piece that you absolutely love but you have no idea how it will fit into your home?  Be adventurous and find a way to incorporate it.  Chances are, it’ll still be the piece you love in ten years. {source}

    I love the idea of adding a splash of color in a hallway or closet:) And we love Haverty’s… over half of our furniture has come from there. They’ve always got great stuff!
